Seattle Mariners: Mariner Moose

 mariners logo

Mariner Moose is the official mascot of the Seattle Mariners, an MLB team placed in the Western Division of the American League. In 1990 a competition for children 14 and under was held to decide on the mascot for the team.

Out of 2500 entries, from kids ages 14 and younger, the club chose the "Mariner Moose." Ammon Spiller, a fifth grader from Central Elementary School in Ferndale, WA, came up with this creative idea. His suggestion included the following justification I chose the Moose because they are funny, neat and friendly. The Moose would show that the Mariners enjoy playing and that they still have a few tricks up their sleeves. It shows they're having fun no matter what the situation.

On opening Night in 1990, the Mariner Moose became the first mascot in team history. The Moose not only entertains the Mariners fans but also serves as a magnificent representation of the great Northwest.

The Moose no longer ask fans to recite, "Go, Mariners!" but encourages everyone to "Do your best!" and under no circumstances lead enthusiasts to cheer for the Mariners. The Moose would entertain fans by rollerblading behind an ATV on the synthetic warning track of the Dome. In 1995 during the American League Championship Series, the Moose attracted national attention when he broke his ankle after crashing into the Kingdome wall on his rollerblades. To add more to this in 1996 his character received more recognition when the Moose ran as Ken Griffey, Jr's running mate in a Nike television campaign.

The Mariner Moose also entertains at special events including birthday parties, weddings and wedding receptions, community events, bar and bat mitzvahs, corporate functions, wedding proposals, anniversary parties and every Mariners home game. He makes hundreds appearances a year at hospitals in the state of Washington along with Mariners players, coaches and broadcaster and delivers special Mariners gift bags.

Mariner Moose's D.R.E.A.M. Team grassroots program stops at elementary schools throughout the Pacific Northwest and preach the significance of the D.R.E.A.M. principles: Drug free, Respect for yourself and others, Education through reading, Attitude and Motivation.
