Oakland Athletics: Stomper the Elephant

 oakland athletics logo

Stomper is the mascot of the Oakland Athletics, a Major League Baseball club. It is an elephant wearing A’s jersey of the number 00. The baseball season is long and Stomper prepares himself to stay fit. As he is the only elephant in the weight room and the only pampered sweet creature, he teases the players with his cute remarks. Before each game, he rides around the field in a little red car “Boogie Buggy” while a song from The Jungle Book movie soundtrack is played. During the play-offs he entertains the fans. Once the game starts, he greets all of the little A's fans that want to take a picture or get an autograph

In 1901 Connie Mack and his Philadelphia Athletics became one of the original founders of the American League. In 1902 New York Giants Manager John McGraw expelled the A's with contempt, by passing them a derogatory remark "The White Elephants." By this he meant to imply that Mack shouldn't be permitted to spend money without supervision. Connie Mack took up the challenge and rebelliously adopted the White Elephant as the team’s insignia. The same season A’s won the AL flag.

This became the cause of annoyance for John McGraw. In 1904, the Athletics won the AL pennant and the Giants won the NL flag. Giants' manager John McGraw declined to participate in what would have been the 2nd Fall Classic competition. One of his pathetic excuses was that the A's were a bunch of "white elephants.” Unconcerned, A's owner/manager Connie Mack made white elephant the team’s mascot. Currently the elephants appear as green on A's uniforms.

Stomper is available year-round for parties, grand openings, parades and festivals. The Stomper Fun Zone is reserved for a private birthday celebration for kids 14 and under.

Stomper made his very first entrance on opening day in 1997 by descending over 400 feet from the centerfield seats to homeplate on a zip line.

From 1961 through 1980 the A's mascot was a mule named Charlie O.
